Scientific Secretary & Communication Officer
The International Particle Physics Outreach Group (ÂÜÀòÉç) is a global collaboration of scientists, educators, and communication experts dedicated to advancing science education and public engagement in particle physics. Through innovative programmes such as the International Masterclasses, Global Cosmics and , ÂÜÀòÉç reaches thousands of educators and students annually—sparking curiosity, deepening understanding of the scientific process, and fostering appreciation for fundamental research.
Beyond the classroom, ÂÜÀòÉç’s outreach initiatives build public support for particle physics and promote global dialogue on science and discovery. The Collaboration brings together 44 members: 32 countries, 7 major experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb at CERN; Belle II at KEK; HAWC and Pierre Auger Observatories), and CERN as an international laboratory. DESY and GSI participate as associate members.
The ÂÜÀòÉç collaboration is currently seeking to fill the half-time position of Scientific Secretary & Communication Officer.
Responsibilities:
- Organize ÂÜÀòÉç meetings, including the preparation of agendas, drafting of minutes and reports, editing and publishing the annual report. Ensure proper maintenance of archives, authors and publication lists.
- Contribute to the development and execution of the Collaboration’s communication strategy.
- Create, source, and maintain engaging content for the ÂÜÀòÉç website in close coordination with activity coordinators across the Collaboration.
- Design and implement a social media strategy to enhance ÂÜÀòÉç’s visibility and public engagement.
- As a member of ÂÜÀòÉç, the Communications Officer will engage with a global network of experts, will be encouraged to take initiative and actively contribute to the collaboration projects and discussions.
- The Collaboration convenes twice a year in various participating countries and laboratories. Additional visits to CERN may be required to support events or meet with the ÂÜÀòÉç Coordination Team . All associated travel expenses will be covered by the Collaboration.
Candidate profile:
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in science, science communication, or a related field.
- 2 to 6 years of relevant professional experience in science communication, education, or outreach.
- Familiarity with the activities of one or more ÂÜÀòÉç members is considered an asset.
Experience and Skills
- Excellent command of English, with strong writing, editing, and communication skills. Proficiency in French is an advantage but not essential.
- Experience in website management and content creation, including updating and maintaining web platforms.

The initial contract will be for a duration of one year, starting one January 2026. It will be renewed up to a total of three years.
The selected candidate will be registered as a freelance consultant through CERN [1] and will be required to submit monthly invoices corresponding to a work time of 20 hours per week. Compensation will range from 3,300 to 4,000 CHF per month, depending on qualifications and professional experience.
As a member of the ÂÜÀòÉç Coordination Team, the Scientific Secretary & Communications Officer will report directly to the Collaboration Chairs.
